Registration is now open for our Online Studio class Whale Tale Journal with Catherine Jordan!

Explore the possibilities of adding color, shading and highlights to simple black work on Whale Tale Journal! his class will begin with outlines of the whale and waves; with easy-to-understand instructions, the whale will come alive and be tossed about on a sea of waves with simply the addition of pH neutral textile paint. The back cover is reserved for the maker’s or receiver’s mark in a nautically themed compass. An easily finished and secure four-sided edging completes this small treasure. A fun class for those ready to take their work to the next level with the addition of color, shading and highlights!

Registration closes on April 5. The PDF Lessons and Videos for the class will be posted to the class page bi-weekly starting June 7 and ending on July 19, 2023.

Here’s a quick rundown of how our online classes work:  Students get access to the class content based on the class schedule and to a class discussion forum where the teacher will answer students’ questions and where students can post photos of their progress and communicate with each other. Lessons can be downloaded at any time up to two months after the last lesson is posted.  Please check the details for each class to see if the class format will include video instruction.

Blustery Conditions with Terri Bay

Blustery Conditions with Terri Bay is the intermediate level in the Snow Hardanger Series. This 7” (17.78cm) square project will lead the stitcher through a review of the basics of Hardanger such as kloster, cable, and blanket stitches, then continue onto more advanced filling stitches and techniques. The basic woven and wrapped bars are embellished with dove’s eye, Greek cross, crossed dove’s eyes, and the lazy daisy. The delicate, lacy edge is tucked into the petite “v” insert on the edges of the design for a finishing touch. Registration: April 5, 2023 – May 3, 2023. Class Schedule: July 12 – August 16, 2023. In Star Spangled Sampler with Dawn Fisher you will stitch a patriotic sampler that was designed as a tribute to the original Star Spangled Banner, which inspired Francis Scott Key to write our National Anthem. During this class, students will learn over 30 unique stitches: two stitches for each of the 15 red, white, and blue stripes, plus two variations of the Star Eyelet. Stitches on the sampler include Mosaic, Star Eyelet, Bound Scotch, Ray, Brighton Square, Smyrna, Covered Cross, Troupe, Modified Rhodes, Rice, Chevron with Eyelets, Foliage, Woven Trellis, Ribbon Cross, Divided Scotch, Cushion, Belgian Cross, Waffle, Wrapped Scotch, and more. Join Kathy Andrews for a brief overview of the concept of a miscellany. We will see a facsimile of the Miscellany and explore the embroidery designs within. Participants will see both period and current examples of embroidered pieces whose designs are inspired/taken from the Miscellany. Recording Now Available: A Journey into Tibet’s Sacred Textile Art with Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo — A California woman traveled to the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile in India to manage an economic development fund. In a twist of fate, she ended up sewing pictures of buddhas instead. She ultimately learned that a path is made by walking it, and some of the best paths are made by walking off course. Coming Soon: How to Research an Antique Sampler with Cindy Steinhoff — An antique sampler reveals some of its physical characteristics and often some information about the girl who stitched it, but what else can it tell us? Cynthia Shank Steinhoff will discuss how she learns more about the samplers she collects and researches. The result is a full documentation of a sampler’s appearance and history. Many of the characteristics that she identifies for older samplers can be used to provide a full description of a needlework piece made today. The presentation will cover a wide range of artistic adventures, from illustration to doll-making to stop-motion animation, all done in her signature hand-stitched style. This is an opportunity to take a behind the scenes peek at Ms. Mavor’s innovative process, which incorporates embroidery, fabric, and found objects.
