Good Manners for Classes
Embroiderers who have not attended a previous seminar may be unaware of ways in which they may inadvertently disturb classmates and teachers.
1. Excessive talking is disruptive. The good student listens to the teacher, not neighbors. If you have questions, ask the teacher, especially if you are struggling with a stitch or technique. Do not attempt to answer questions for the teacher.
2. Listen to instructions carefully and read all written material. Remember, however, not to take all the teacher’s time. Share her with others.
3. Teachers are hired because they have displayed expertise in areas or techniques which the group wants to learn. If your normal procedure is different, give the new way a trial. Don’t discuss other teachers or their styles/techniques. Precious little in the needlework field is carved in stone. If you don’t agree with the teacher, the evaluation form is your means of communication. For the others in the class, this teacher may be the “fountain of wisdom.”
4. Strict policy prohibits all smoking, food, and drink in classroom areas. Areas AWAY from work surfaces shall be designated.
5. Directions are not to be copied or taught without written permission from the teacher. You could be breaking the law and be in violation of EGA Copyright Ethics Statement as well as the U.S. Copyright Laws.
6. Don’t forget to say “thank you” to your teacher.
7. Wear your name tag.
8. Be on time for class and be prepared with class supplies as noted by the program chairman and/or the teacher prior to class. Anticipate extra needs; extension cords, needles, etc.
9. Do not return late from lunch. This is discourteous to the class and teacher.
10. Make every effort to stay for the entire workshop time. If you must leave early, advise the teacher prior to class and make arrangements to get the additional instructions from a fellow student at a later time. Do not demand time from the teacher.
11. Just as you come to class on time, be sure to leave promptly when the class is over. Don’t delay the teacher from a scheduled departure time.
12. Be sure to set your phones to vibrate/silent before class starts. If you have a call you have to take, let the teacher know before class and then leave the classroom to answer the phone.
If everyone adheres to these policies, every workshop will be a delightful learning experience.
