Rennie's Rose Garden

Learn for the comfort of your home!

Welcome to Rennie’s Rose Garden! Juliet told Romeo that “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” The world would be a poorer place without the beauty and fragrance of the beloved rose.

In the early 1900s, the Scottish designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife, Margaret, brought to the world the reimagined roses of the Modern Style, kicking off a new concept of roses in art and how we view their blooms.

The kit for this class includes a 5″ x 5″ (12.7cm x 12.7cm) box top on a 9″ x 9″ (22.86cm x 22.86cm) line-drawn canvas. These roses will spring to life as you apply a variety of included threads, such as overdyed cottons and silks, as well as stranded cotton floss. Perhaps you have an overdye or two in your stash that also will be perfect for this project.

The class will use a variety of stitches, including the diagonal mosaic stitch, the alternating Scotch stitch, basketweave stitch, and a leaf stitch motif.

The kit will include a line-drawn canvas on rose pink Congress cloth, printed instructions, threads, needles, and a color photo. The kit will also include supplies for a needle book and scissors fob. The kit does not include the box.

Students will provide two pairs of 9″ x 9″ (22.86cm x 22.86cm) stretcher bars; tacks or staples; a laying tool; a frame weight, clamps, or a stand; task lighting; magnification, if necessary; and their usual stitching tools.
Because this is a project with a kit, we strongly encourage students to sign up for “Informed Delivery” at USPS.com/manage/informed-delivery.htm if they don’t already have this free service. Through this service, the U.S. Postal Service emails you image scans of your mail to be delivered that day. This way, you will know exactly when the package is arriving and if anything goes astray, you can resolve it quickly.

  • About teacher Wendy Moore

Wendy Moore incorporates both her Master of Fine Arts degree in theatrical costume design and many years of classroom teaching to her needlework design and classes. She has a vivid interest in color theory and computer work. One of Moore’s goals is to bring other forms of counted thread work to canvas designs. As noted in her “Designers Across America” profile (Needle Arts, June 2023), her love of the Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts eras has translated into making the Mackintosh Rose part of her personal brand.
