Preserving Needle Art 2024 Atlanta Tours
One of the most fun things to do at National Seminar is to find the hidden gems in the city you’re visiting. One of the best ways to do that is to take a tour, where you get to participate in some unique activities. This year, Seminar 2024 – Preserving Needle Art – Atlanta has found twosuch gems.
All tours will be on Friday, August 16th. Be sure to check each tour for its starting time. Note that the tour times overlap, so you will only be able to go on one tour. Each tour has limited space available, and seats will be filled on a first come, first served basis. There is not a wait list available for the tours in CVENT, but you can email Gaye Smith at the email address below to be added to a waitlist. We do expect the tours to fill quickly, so if you are interested, be sure to add it to your registration right away.
To add a tour, use your confirmation email and your confirmation number. In your confirmation email, there is a “View or Modify” link at the bottom of the email. Click that. Scroll through your registration until you reach the “Optional Items” page. The tours are located on that page.
If you would like to attend a tour and are not registered for seminar, you may send a check payable to 2024 EGA National Seminar to Gaye Smith, assistant registrar, 9251 Jennifer Lynn Rd. Denham Springs, LA 70706, for your selected tour. Tickets will be held at the registration desk at the Hilton. Please specify which tour you wish to attend.
We also need an angel for each tour who makes sure that all participants have their ticket, are present at the departure and on the bus for the return. If you are interested in being the tour angel, please contact Gaye Smith, Registrar, at Registrar2024@egausa.org.

First Timers: Things you wished you knew before attending Seminar!
Things you wished you knew before attending Seminar!
Hi! My name is Marjorie Sink, I am the Region Director for the Tennessee Valley Region and am serving as the First Timer Chair for the 2024 National Seminar, “Preserving Needle Art” These are some suggestions that were shared with me by attendees of the EGA 2023 National Seminar in Boston, and other stitchers that I have heard from, which might make your experience less stressful and more fun!
For the First Timers reading this – We are SO glad that you are coming to Atlanta to experience your first EGA National Seminar!
For the More Seasoned Seminar Person – We are glad you are here as well!! You have an important job – help our First Timers enjoy this seminar!
What to do when you arrive:
- Check into the hotel and get your room number
- Go to the EGA Seminar Registration Desk. (There will be signs showing you where it is) and pick up your Registration Packet
- Verify your information on the paper provided, fill in your room number, make any changes, hand back the information sheet to the Registrar (or person working at the desk).
- Receive your Seminar Handbook.
Seminar Handbook: Keep up with this book! Since we will all have the same book – you might want to put your name on the front. In in you will find daily schedules that will help you know what is happening, and where it is happening.
Seminar Newsletters will be published on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) during seminar week. You will also get a Pre-Seminar Newsletter via email before you come to Atlanta – be on the watch for that! These newsletters will highlight upcoming events, alert you to classroom changes and more. Be sure to read these.
The Registration Desk will be manned from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. So if you have questions – please go there and ask! Or just come by and say hi!! There will be a white board for messages such as ride sharing to the airport, extra tickets for sale, etc.
First Aid kit will be available at the Registration Desk.
Lost and Found: Although the hotel has a lost and found, EGA will have one at the registration desk as well. Please label all your personal items so that if they are misplaced, we can get them back to you.
Just a thought: With things being as they are – Covid is always in the conversation. You might want to pack a mask, and if you have one, a Covid test.
Nametag: You will find this in your registration packet. Wearing this lets people know that you are a part of the Seminar!
- First Timers will have a dot sticker on their nametag. WATCH FOR THESE! Help make the First Timers feel Welcomed!
- Attend the First Timer Meeting. Ask questions! For our seminar this will be held on Tuesday, August 13th from 4 – 5 pm.
Go find your classroom – this will help you on the morning of your class to know where you are going!
Talk to people – Everyone wants to share “their story” so think about some ways to open up a conversation
Suggestions:
- What class are you taking?
- Where do you live?
- Did you make your Shawl, bag, Necklace?
- What is your favorite type of needlework?
What are “normal stitching supplies”? These vary for the stitchers. This list is not gospel – just opinion of several stitchers. Go with what you think….
- Extra needles
- Sharp pointed scissors (maybe 2 pair – one for regular and silk fibers and one for metallic and paper)
- a small ruler (6 inch),
- pencil or pen and highlighter
- masking tape (if canvas is not taped)
- needle threader (if you need one),
- Laying tool
- Table stand or floor stand (again if you use one) it is good sometimes to be able to have both hands free to stitch. A clamp from the hardware store works as well!
- Tacks.
- A small tack hammer is good to help put those stretcher bars together!
- *Refer to teacher letter for sizes of stretcher bars that you will need and any other items that might be mentioned.
**No extension cords at Seminar**
Do you use a light? If it works on batteries (bring extra batteries) OR you can bring a power bank that you can charge up in your room and bring to class to use as a power source.
Classes:
Your teacher will send you a “teacher letter” before Seminar. In this letter you will find a list of “what the student needs to bring list”. If you can’t find an item, check with other stitchers, or the teacher. I usually bring my teacher letter with me as well.
**Classes will start at 8:30 am.
- People start arriving in the classrooms as early as 8:00 am. This is a good idea so that you can get yourself a seat and get ready to start when the class begins. If your class is a multi-day class, this will normally be your seat every day.
- Bring a sweater/jacket and long sleeve shirts for the classrooms, as well as the hotel, can be cold.
- Wear your nametags
- Ask someone to join you to go to lunch.
Several people urged me to say – “Be early to class!”
**If you have a Cell Phone – Silence this before class starts
Try to have your stretcher bars put together before class. If you hear hammering the night before, that will be the explanation for that!
The kits are given out in class. Listen to your teacher to see what she wants you to do. Some teachers like to go over the kit as class starts. And some tell you how they want you to put the canvas on the stretcher bars.
- You can always learn something new – no matter how long you have been stitching!
Have a pencil or pen to take notes!!!! I write down and underline things that the teacher talks about in class on the directions for the piece, that way you don’t have to go to another notebook for information. BUT – it is a good idea to have a small notebook to write down some things.
One more thing about classes: My husband was surprised in how much I DIDN’T get stitched after my first Seminar. The majority of us go home with bits and pieces of our class piece stitched. Don’t expect to go home with the whole thing done! Just saying!
- There will be fast stitchers in your classes! We all work at our own pace – don’t get discouraged if you are not as far along as someone beside you!
ENJOY EVERYTHING YOU CAN!
Everyone can sign up to VOLUNTEER during Seminar!!!
Volunteer: This is a great way to meet people AND help out with seminar. If you have free time – PLEASE consider doing this. Go to Seminar Central 2024 and click on Volunteer and see where and when you might be able to help out!
Bag Check Tables: Volunteering leads me to talk about the bag check tables that you will see outside of the Pop-Up Shop area and the Exhibit Area. We stitchers sometimes look like Bag Ladies! To get our hands free to shop, and not lug around items that could bump into things – we have a bag check system. You leave your bags behind the table (manned by Volunteers) where you will get ½ of a playing card and the other ½ will be attached onto your bag. We have done this for YEARS – and thought the First Timers needed to know about that!
Other things that are happening at Seminar
Pop-Up Shops
This seminar we are doing something new – Pop-Up Shops. There will be a schedule in your Seminar Handbook telling you what shops are coming and when they will be at seminar.
These shops will have a variety of wonderful Needlework items for us to purchase and take home to enjoy!! Be sure to look in your handbook for the specific information about each shop and when and where to go to take advantage of daily shopping!!
Bring Cash for shopping as some of the pop-up shops might not have card readers. I have been told that there is an ATM machine inside the hotel.
Tours: (advanced sign-up and requires a purchased ticket)
Have you looked on Seminar Central to see the tours that have been scheduled during seminar? These are open to anyone. Go see what the options are and sign up before seminar. Spaces are limited for each tour.
Banquets: (Know which banquet(s) you are attending.)
- Dress for Banquets: Back in the day, the dress for this was very much more formal than it is now. Although some people do enjoy dressing up for these, the majority dress in clothes they would wear going out to a nice restaurant or business casual.
- During the Opening Banquet, on August 14th, we will be sitting as Regions. So you will look for the signs on the tables with the Region Name. If you are a Member at Large – you will sit table with the region in which you reside.
- The Closing Banquet, on August 17th, has everyone sitting where they want. There will be a sign up chart for seating near the Registration Desk. If you don’t know anyone, you can reach out to people in your class to join with them! Or just put your name on a seat – others will come! Stitchers are nice people!!!
Exhibits: Going to this is a MUST!
- There is also NO PHOTOGRAPHY allowed in the exhibit area. So just keep those cell phones tucked in your pocket. ☺
First you will find all the pieces that are being taught at the EGA 2025 National Seminar in Dallas, Texas on November 12 – 16, 2025. Be sure to write down your favorite pieces, so you will remember them when registration opens. Information on when Registration opens will be at the information table inside the Exhibit. There will be Seminar Staff for 2025 National Seminar, “Needlework Faire” on hand to answer questions.
Then, there is the EGA Education Display. We all know that there is a huge difference when we see a picture of a piece and then see it in person! This is why I get so excited about this part of the Exhibit!
You will see examples of Petite Projects, On-Line Classes, and Group Correspondence Courses. You will also be able to see examples of pieces that were submitted for various stages of the Master Craftsman program, and many of the other educational opportunities that EGA offers its members.
- You might want to come to the Exhibit several times during the week! So you can really take in all that EGA offers us!
Meet the Faculty: This will be held on Tuesday, August 13th from 5 -6 pm. During this time, the teachers who are teaching at the Seminar will be showing the pieces that are being taught. Come by and see all the beautiful pieces, and take the opportunity to meet your teacher(s) before class starts.
Teacher Showcase: Scheduled on Friday, August 16th from 5:30 – 6:30 pm. During this time, the teachers display pieces that they offer to teach in person, and some virtually. You might find a class you want to suggest for your chapter.
To sum up this epistle:
- We are all glad you are here!
- Don’t’ be afraid to talk to others.
- We hope you find everyone welcoming and friendly!
- Be ready to make new friends! We are people who speak your language – the love of stitching.
- Learn what you can, listen, and work at your own pace
- ENJOY your time at seminar!!!
Note to the more “Seasoned Seminar Stitchers” I encourage you to be aware of those First Timers around you (Look for the DOT on their nametag.) – you might ask them if they have any questions! Or invite them to your table – or to eat lunch with you! Just think back on your first National Seminar days, you will know what you could do!

Stitchin’ Time
Let’s get this straight – it’s ALWAYS Stitchin’ Time!
What is Stitchin’ Time?
It’s a special place set aside for all stitchers (EGA members & non-members) to come together and do what we love most – STITCH! Round tables of 6-8 will be set up in a ballroom space for you to make yourself comfortable and spend quality time socializing, sharing and having fun. So, whether you have a day in between classes or just want a getaway where you can meet other stitchers from around the country, we’ve got you covered. Think 5 day stitchin’ retreat…
What if I have a question about my stitching?
There won’t be a teacher available, but there will be a room full of experienced stitchers, so there’s always help available.
What are the hours?
Stitchin’ Time will be open from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. each day from August 14 through August 18th. Come on now – you need your beauty rest and you only want your stitches crossed – not your eyes!
What does it cost?
The cost for Stitchin’ Time is $80/day if you aren’t a member of EGA and don’t plan to stay in the hotel in our reserved room block. It’s $70/day if you are either a member of EGA and not staying in the hotel in our reserved room block or a non-member staying in our reserved room block. Best deal is $60/day if you are an EGA member and you are staying in the reserved room block.
What do I get for my money?
There will be special swag for those registered for Stitchin’ time, which you’ll get whether you come for one day or all 5 days. There will be door prizes every single day. There will be visitors to the room each day from EGA to talk about membership, education and more. You will be able to shop in our daily pop-up shops and visit the extensive exhibit hall featuring many education exhibits, 2025’s seminar class projects, and more.
What should I bring?
Bring your work(s) in progress and your stitching supplies. Lighting is good, but nothing replaces the sun, so bring your cordless light and magnification if needed. Extension cords are not allowed by the hotel as they pose a tripping hazard. There will be grab & go lunches available or you can bring a sack lunch. We’ll have a reserved area in which you can dine and keep your stitching space clean!
How do I register?
Registration is easy! Visit our seminar central page(this page) and click on the link to register. We need to know you’re coming so that we can reserve your seat and get your name badge ready! You can even make your hotel reservation on the same page by clicking on the hotel link.
Can I walk up and pay?
Yes, only if there’s a seat available, but you may not get swag based on quantities available. We highly recommend that you register, so you don’t miss anything!
Night Owls Stitchin’ Time
Did you know . . .
Stitchin’ Time is available for Seminar participants who want to spend time working on their own projects.
But what if you need additional time to stitch on your class project? Or, what if your teacher has assigned homework to be completed before the next day’s class? Of course, you can sit in your hotel room and work on your project. But wouldn’t it be more fun to sit in a room with good lighting, sufficient space to spread out and with like-minded people?
Or, what if you live in the area and want to get a taste of seminar?Come join us in at Night Owls Stitchin’ Time! Cost is $20.00 for each evening from, Wednesday through Saturday from 4:30 until 10 p.m. You will receive a goodie bag for each evening you participate. Remember, banquets are on Wednesday evening and Saturday evening, so make your plans accordingly. You will also have the option of paying cash at the door, but seating may be limited.
To add this to your existing Seminar registration, you’ll need your confirmation number from your confirmation email to modify your registration to include these additional items. Just scroll through your registration until you find the “Optional Items” page and add the evenings you wish to enroll in Night Owls Stitchin’ Time.
You can always contact Gaye Smith, Assistant Registrar at registrar2024@egausa.org.

Atlanta is home to the busiest airport in the world – Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. It is also the hub for Delta Airlines. You may find information on all the various transportation to and from the airport at their link: https://atlantaairport.info/ground-transportation/
Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is located approximately 11 miles from the Atlanta Hilton Hotel. The cost for a cab is approximately $30 and subject to change.
Public transportation is through MARTA and there is train service from inside the airport directly to Peachtree Center, from which you can walk through the Marriott Marquis and into the Atlanta Hilton hotel through a pedestrian walkway. If, however, you plan to bring a fair amount of luggage, this may not be your best option. MARTA has an app (MARTA On the Go) where you can purchase tickets on your phone, or you may purchase them from a kiosk in the train station with your credit card.

Seminar Rules of Etiquette
Good Manners for Workshops
Embroiderers who have not attended a previous seminar may be unaware of ways in which they may inadvertently disturb classmates and teachers.
1. Excessive talking is disruptive. The good student listens to the teacher, not neighbors. If you have questions, ask the teacher, especially if you are struggling with a stitch or technique. Do not attempt to answer questions for the teacher.
2. Listen to instructions carefully and read all written material. Remember, however, not to take all the teacher’s time. Share her with others.
3. Teachers are hired because they have displayed expertise in areas or techniques which the group wants to learn. If your normal procedure is different, give the new way a trial. Don’t discuss other teachers or their styles/techniques. Precious little in the needlework field is carved in stone. If you don’t agree with the teacher, the evaluation form is your means of communication. For the others in the class, this teacher may be the “fountain of wisdom.”
4. Strict policy prohibits all smoking, food, and drink in classroom areas. Areas AWAY from work surfaces shall be designated.
5. Directions are not to be copied or taught without written permission from the teacher. You could be breaking the law and be in violation of EGA Copyright Ethics Statement as well as the U.S. Copyright Laws.
6. Don’t forget to say “thank you” to your teacher.
7. Wear your name tag.
8. Be on time for class and be prepared with class supplies as noted by the program chairman and/or the teacher prior to class. Anticipate extra needs; extension cords, needles, etc.
9. Do not return late from lunch. This is discourteous to the class and teacher.
10. Make every effort to stay for the entire workshop time. If you must leave early, advise the teacher prior to class and make arrangements to get the additional instructions from a fellow student at a later time. Do not demand time from the teacher.
11. Just as you come to class on time, be sure to leave promptly when the class is over. Don’t delay the teacher from a scheduled departure time.
If everyone adheres to these policies, every workshop will be a delightful learning experience.

First Come, First Served Registration FAQs
1. What is EGA National Seminar first come, first served registration?
First come first served registration will eliminate the waiting period to receive the class assignments. A registrant will know immediately upon successful payment confirmation if they are in a class or not. And, if the desired class is full, the registrant will be able to enroll themselves in a second-choice class AND if desired, place themselves on a waitlist for the full class.2. What does “successful payment confirmation” mean?
When the registrant’s credit card payment has been accepted by the registration system. Make sure you pay right away to get your spot as someone may pay for the last spot ahead of you!3. What is the difference between first come, first served registration and the current multiple phase registration process?
Registration for the current multiple phase registration process consists of an “early registration period” where registrants indicate first, second, and third choice classes and all registrations received have an equal chance of enrollment in a class that is oversubscribed. If they do not get their first choice, they are placed in their second choice class and if that is oversubscribed, they are placed in their third choice class. If the third choice class is not available, then the registrant is contacted to determine the next steps. First come first served registration eliminates the need for the registrar to place registrants in their class(es).4. What is a waitlist?
Once the class has reached maximum capacity (usually 22 – 25 students), the registrant will have the option of placing themselves on a waitlist in case a seat opens in the class.5. How will I know if a seat has opened for me in a waitlisted class?
If a seat becomes available in the waitlisted class, the registrant will be notified by email, in order of waitlist placement, that a seat is available. The registrant has the option to choose to change their registration to the waitlisted class or leave it as is. Please note, the notified registrant will have a limited amount of time to act on the waitlist email. If the seat in the class is still available after the time period indicated in the email, then the next registrant on the waitlist will be notified. At this point, the first one to register will get in the class. The waitlist will be worked in this order automatically until either the seat is taken or all waitlisted registrants have been notified. If none of the waitlisted participants take the seat, that seat is open for anyone to enroll in the class.6. If I do not act on the email in a timely manner and a subsequent registrant takes the seat, what happens to my request on the waitlist?
You remain on the waitlist in the original order. If another seat becomes available, you will be notified.7. Can I register for a different class on the same class day(s) if I am on a waitlist for another class?
Yes. If you receive an email notification of availability in the waitlisted class and decide to change classes, you will remove yourself from the original class and enroll yourself in the waitlisted class.8. Will I have to return at a future date to add extra Banquet tickets or other items to my registration?
Every effort will be made to have all known events and activities available when registration opens. Occasionally new events, such as tours, are added after registration opens. If there are additions, you will be notified via email of the additions so you may add them to your registration if desired.9. What happens if I change my mind about a class, banquet ticket, tour, or other event?
You will have an opportunity to add or change items, subject to seat availability, until the close of registration.10. Will registration close temporarily at any time before the Closing Date?”
No. There will be no interruption of registration. Registration will remain open until the Seminar Registration Closing Date as published on EGA’s Seminar Central.11. When will I be able to register for the seminar?
Registration will open after the current seminar ends at a predetermined time that is equitable to most of our worldwide participants.12. Who can register for seminar?
Anyone interested in coming to the seminar as a class attendee or a nonparticipant can register during the registration period. You do not have to be an EGA member to attend Seminar, although nonmembers will pay an additional fee.13. Will the projects for the next seminar be available to view at the current seminar?
Yes. The next year’s class pieces will be on display for everyone to see.14. Do I have to attend the current seminar to be eligible to register for the next seminar?
No. Anyone interested in coming to the seminar as a class attendee or a nonparticipant can register during the registration period. However, if you are not attending the current seminar, you will miss seeing next year’s class projects in person.15. What if I cannot attend the current seminar. How do I know what classes are available for the next seminar?
Prior to registration opening, class pictures, descriptions, fee structure, and other relevant information will be published on the EGA website. Once registration opens, a link to the registration pages also will be published on the EGA Seminar Central website.16. How much will I need to pay when I register?
There will be a minimum payment required or you may pay in full at the time of registration. Full payment must be made no later than the published payment deadline.17. How much will I need to pay if I do not register for a class, but are on one or more waitlists?
You will pay the nonrefundable administrative fee to be placed on a waitlist. If you subsequently enroll in a class, the remaining fees are due by the published payment deadline.18. What happens if the registration amount changes when I change classes?
If full payment has not been received at the time of the change, your remaining amount due will change to the new total (whether more or less). If full payment has already been received, you will either pay any amount due or be issued a refund.19. What if I do not want to register online?
There will be an option for registration via U.S. Mail. Beginning on the second day after online registration begins, the Assistant Registrar will process mailed forms in the order received by postmark date. Mailed registration forms will have a second and third choice provision.20. Do I have to pay via credit card?
No. You may mail a check to the Assistant Registrar.21. What happens to my nonrefundable administrative fee if EGA cancels my class?
If you are not enrolled in any other seminar class, you will receive a full refund, including the nonrefundable administrative fee.22. What happens to my nonrefundable administrative fee if I am on a waitlist and do not get into the class by the close of registration?
If you are not enrolled in any other seminar class, you will receive a full refund including the nonrefundable administrative fee.23. What information do I need to have to register for a class?
Among other things, you will need a list of which class(es) you wish to take, the email address you will use for all seminar correspondence that you check regularly, and your EGA member number. If you do not already know your member number, it can be found on the cover of your Needle Arts magazine, on the EGA website after logging into the members only section, or you may contact EGA headquarters for assistance. -
