Pat, thanks for a fun class. I lined my needle minder to stall bearding from the stuffing, taped washers to the cardboard to give the piece some weight, and put two magnets inside, positioned so they’re just inside the frame, leaving the lower left area for poking needles into the stuffing.

It looks like all is quiet on the forum front, but I may as well say something to liven it up a little. I have no experience yet in this time period, but it has been a favorite historical era for me for a long time. In college I did an in-class presentation on some of the dyes, and am intrigued by the early formation of the craft guilds and the…[Read more]

    • There are a lot of older books out there with great photos of Medieval needlework. Itbis also true no garments appear that are not ecclesiastical. We know Chaucer mentioned one of his characters had black embroidery on her white shift and that it was the same front and back. But not a lot of textual evidence of embroidered clothing exists. That…[Read more]

    • I think you make good points, both about the accepted assumption of embroidered clothing not being “a thing” and also with your own guess about human nature. 🙂
I’m somewhat familiar with the blackwork-embroidered underclothing, as it became prominent later in history, but I didn’t know Chaucer had referred to it so early on!
      I have been…[Read more]

I have totally enjoyed the class. I tried Dorset buttons a few years ago on my own (the multi colored ones) but never got past the basics. Can’t wait to try experimenting with more. Thanks Pat

  • When I try to upload a photo, the post update button disappears. What gives?

  • I am so happy with the colors!

  • Has the Dorset Button class ended? I requested approval a week ago and I keep getting the following message: \”This is a private group. Your membership request is awaiting approval from the group administrator.\” Can anyone help?

  • sort of getting older and slower and thinking more of crewel and less of cross stitch samplers. Mostly, glad i\’m able to stitch.

  • I am using my piece on a wooden jewelry box for my Grand-daughter. I am not finishing the last two border rows until I receive the box & know how much space I need to fit inside the opening. I\’m doing the box, because I wish to enclose a beaded necklace I made inside & my Grandmother\’s pin…….the continuity of family continues!

  • Here is my completed button. My needle weaving is not great at the beginning but improved as I went along. Also 2 more that I tried for a crazy quilt block. The Kreinik braid was not easy to use but I like the way it looks. Pat, any tips for making a bow on the button rim the will stay horizontal? The braid is not the best fiber for that I…[Read more]

  • The group button keeps saying that there are recent posts but nothing shows

  • Finished my button. Thank you Pat for the clear instructions.

  • Lynette Maton has put together a power point presentation on the history of the 1970’s historic reproduction sampler called, ‘The Chase’ and the history of the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework. The power point presentation was presented on Zoom to chapter members and members of the public interested in it. We had approximately 24…[Read more]

  • I really loved this project. I worried about what the framing would cost so was on the lookout for a circular frame at antique stores over the last few weeks. This frame actually came from a malfunctioning clock I had in the garage. Thanks for the lessons on needles, threads, and stitches. And particular thanks for the project, Judy…[Read more]
