Well done! It looks very smart, and I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the class.
In terms of when to lace an when to tape, it’s not so much down to the fabric – I’ve taped both cottons, linens and silks (mostly dupion) with no issues (possibly really heavy fabrics would struggle with tape). Generally I choose the method based on what the piece will be…[Read more]

So sorry to hear that, and hope you recover soon.
The muslin is for backing the fabric for the outer lid – mostly to act as a support for the embroidery. It can be trimmed back whilst making the lid to minimise bulk on the back.
The cotton would probably be OK for the embroidery without it, but I always figure better safe than sorry on that front!

Hi Virginia,
The lace I used has a scallop, but it’s between 1.5 -2cm deep – you could use something wider or narrower depending on what you have in your stash.
Best wishes,
Sarah

That was a good question. How wide is the lace you used? I am sewing from my stash.

Finished my box today. It is a little wonky and after measuring and measuring I still managed to get my monogram off center. However, I have greatly enjoyed learning how to construct the box and complete this project. Thank you for a wonderful informative class.
I do have one question: Since you had us use both the lacing and taping method th…[Read more]

Hi Sarah, I am very behind. I have had a bad dose of COVID and it has left me with the rare but well recognised symptom of nystagmus. This means my eyeballs wobble about 2mm and I cannot focus to cut the card or fabric. It should settle. I have watched the videos. When covering the outer box do I use the muslin and green fabric or just the gr…[Read more]

Alison,
Ah pins, the bane of my working life! They are a pain, but I do have a couple of tips that should help!
First, as Gail says above, holding the card up so that the thread hangs down is the quickest solution (and one you can see me doing in the videos – thankfully i have to delete the audio when I speed the video up, removing the sounds…[Read more]

Yes, so sorry, I did print the directions. I have been off kilter in this course since I printed your pages but could not see all the gridlines and could not do the basting. Then Dawn talked about EGA not uploading the directions and I was further confused, thinking there were additional directions.
PLEASE, those of you who have done Le…[Read more]

I held the piece above my eye level so the strings hung down away from the needles while I laced.
for blood stains I use contact lens cleaner which is deluded hydrogen peroxide and scrub lightly with a toothbrush.

Hi Sarah,
Thank you for the very detailed guidance on lacing – I’ve always hated doing it, but now I realize what some of my errors were – my lacing in coming along nicely. (Yes, I’m a bit behind on my progress…)
One question though – how in the dickens do you prevent your thread from constantly tangling on the pins holding the fabric to the…[Read more]

Becky,
That’s excellent news, I was away over the weekend so only just able to get back and measure the lace.
Best wishes,

My apologies if this is double posted – I thought I posted this from my phone yesterday but I don’t see it now ???
Sarah, I’m missing the lace for my box. I’m pretty sure I got it, but it’s disappeared! I’m happy to pick up something locally. What width is the lace, and is there anything else I need to know? Thanks.

Marita,
I think your monogram is beautiful – very delicate and neat, it looks like you have that cylindrical shape all the way through, which is tricky to do.
I would suggest that with your feathered chain stitch, if you pull just a little tighter on your thread as you come back up through the chain will help to get a consistent shape of the…[Read more]

Hi Nikki,
You’ve done a nice job with the box construction, everything looks nice an well fitted together. I can see a couple of the ladder stitches joining the inner to the outer, but this I think is due to the pale thread used, if you had a darker thread they would probably be completely invisible.
On the trailing, the over stitches look l…[Read more]

Becky,
I think the knot at the join is a lovely little touch! Your trailing is nice and neat, there is a small wobble just before the cross over, but you’ve done a nice job with the tapering and on the join in the outer ring.
