Memories of Mary-Dick Digges
Mary Cuthbert Bush Digges (1934–2001), known to friends as Mary-Dick, achieved several lifelong achievements in needlework. They include:
• A founding member of the EGA
• Master Craftsman certified in crewel, canvas, and counted thread
• Chair of the Master Craftsman Committee on crewel embroidery
• Founding president of the Tidewater Virginia Chapter
• Owner and manager of a needlework shop in Williamsburg, VA, and another in Richmond, VA
• Publisher-Owner of Embroidery Research Press Inc., Roswell, GA
• Co-author of Lady Evelyn’s Needlework Collection, which explores the embroidery collection of Lady Evelyn Stewart Murry housed in Blair Castle, Scotland
• Instrumental in helping to establish the Japanese Embroidery Center in Atlanta, GA
Established in April 2001, the annual Mary-Dick Digges Scholarship is intended for the study of surface embroidery, defined as crewel embroidery, Japanese embroidery, and stumpwork. The study does not have to be through EGA.
