Nutcracker Santa is a delightful ornament that will look fantastic on your Christmas tree. It is the latest in a collection of Santa heads that are inspired by Polish glass ornaments. This ornament is stitched with a variety of rich and sparkling threads including Very Velvet, Ribbon Floss, Splendor Silk, Fuzzy Stuff, and Kreinik Metallics. Strawberry is inspired by botanical illustrations of fruits and flowers published in England in the 16th century. The delicate flower and delectable fruits sparkle with highlights of silver and hints of gold. Layers of colored silks worked in simple embroidery stitches are combined with introductory metal thread techniques including the use of pearl purl and chipping. The project will be embroidered on a cream silk ground.

She is the designated US teacher for the Kunimitsu Rozashi Studio and studies with Fumiko Ozaki. Margaret is the 2010 recipient of the national EGA Gold Thread Award and teaches at all levels of EGA. She teaches at national seminars and chapters of ANG and EAC. She was the 2012 keynote speaker and taught at the New Zealand Embroidery Guild Conference in Christchurch, NZ, and toured, taught, and lectured additional venues in New Zealand. Join me for an adventure in texture. Snow on the Mountain, a show towel, combines pulled, drawn and counted thread embroidery. The smooth silkiness of satin stitch contrasts with the roughness of feather stitch and the openness of drawn thread. Students will learn to pull and withdraw threads, secure open areas with hemstitching and cut a buttonholed edge. Working on a bookmark sized sampler students will complete each row of the design in class. Later they may individualize their towels with any desired design changes.

She is a self-taught designer and stitcher and has concentrated on counted thread techniques and samplers for the past 30 years. This pretty motif is inspired by embroidery decorating accessories worn during the reign of Elizabeth I. It is an intriguing combination of colorful silk embroidery and basic goldwork techniques using colored metal threads. A Tudor rose, strawberries and borage blooms in colored silk are entwined with delicate stems and leaves using metal threads on a silk satin ground dotted with sparkling gold spangles.

213 Romanesque Bracelet & Necklace – Designed by Maggie Meister and Taught by Marie Campbell
October 4, 2018 - October 5, 2018Romanesque Bracelet & Necklace was inspired by the many examples of Romanesque architecture and motifs in the Emilia Romagna area of northeast Italy, and handicrafts of the Ars Canusina movement in the town of Canossa, also in northern Italy. These pieces are the second in Maggie’s architecture series; the Romanesque arch is integral to both designs. The pieces are made with cubic right-angle weave, odd-count Peyote, and embellishments. The tassel also has a dome using circular brick stitch.

Maggie’s love of ancient history, color and patterns has followed her throughout her life. She uses seed beads, gemstones, focal beads, and a variety of bead weaving stitches – Peyote, Right Angle Weave, St. Petersburg, to name just a few- to translate designs found in mosaics, frescoes, architecture and jewelry into sculptural bead art to wear. Maggie has taught and continues to teach workshops nationally and internationally throughout Europe. Her work has been shown in London, Milan and Naples and has been featured in Ornament magazine, Beadwork magazine, Bead & Button, and a variety of books. October 4, 2018 - October 5, 2018This goldwork fleur-de-lis is fresher and visually lighter than the classic symbols of the cities named for French Kings – Louisville, St. Louis, New Orleans. Embellished with reflective jewels asymmetrically balanced into a stable triangle, and curve lines anchored with pearls, spangles, montées and shaped crystals. Depth of perspective is achieved by using graduated sizes of gold and other embellishments. The design combines the themes of the gold-embroidered clothes of 18th century French royalty with the look of the corner of an illuminated medieval manuscript.

Commemorate EGA’s 60th anniversary by constructing a needlebook and pinkeep to celebrate your seminar experience in Louisville. However the variety of stitches will hold the interest of those familiar with crewel. Finishing techniques demonstrated in class can be applied to future projects. Lecture in class will discuss how traditional crewel colors were dyed and the use of thread conserving stitches.

This covered box, surrounded with brightly colored flowers, was inspired by an embroidered ribbon. The flowers are delicately appointed with beads and the box is large enough to house a purse, hairband and barrette accessories, or any embroidery smalls. She has been editorial coordinator for ANG’s Needle Pointers, contributing editor for Fine Lines, and a frequent contributor to Antique Review and Cotton & Quail. She is both and EGA- and NAN-certified master judge and EGA-certified appraiser. She has been Director of Judges’ Certification for National Academy of Needlearts and has co-chaired EGA’s Appraiser Certification Program being certified through both EGA in needlework and the College for Appraisers in the decorative arts, as well as being USPAP compliant. Christian completed the full three-year rotation of the Summer Institute at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Art in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She publishes and lectures on material culture, textiles, judging, appraising, and history, and, in particular, the contextualization samplers. Christian practices many kinds of needlework, conducts research on textiles and history, and continues to learn as many different forms of needle art as possible. Taught by India Hayford (view bio)India specializes in contemporary and ethnic surface embroidery techniques including Yemenite Jewish and Yemenite Israeli embroidery, clothing embellishment, and fabric collage. She also teaches courses on embroidery design, Middle Eastern costume construction and embellishment, and nontraditional needlepoint and blackwork. Her articles on these subjects have appeared in Threads and Needle Arts magazines. An EGA Certified Teacher, India is the recipient of two EGA Legacy Scholarships and one Research Fellowship Grant. From 1972, she has led ongoing classes in needlepoint embroidery and Hardangersom through the Madison Area Technical College. Since 1991 her workshops have been exclusively Hardangersom. 410 Crane with Temari Balls
Taught by Arata Tamura (view bio)Arata has a passion to share the1600-year old legacy of Japanese embroidery to stitchers all around the world.
Having a grandfather, Iwao Saito (1918-1989), who was a Japanese embroidery master and founder of Kurenai Kai school of Japanese embroidery in Japan, Arata had a chance to be exposed to the art of Japanese embroidery from a young age. At age 12 he moved with his family to Atlanta, GA where he witnessed many people around the world being inspired by the beauty of Japanese embroidery. Around that time, his father Shuji Tamura, successor of Iwao Saito, established the art concept called Nuido, the way of embroidery, which aims for the integration of Japanese embroidery and spirituality.
Arata received an undergraduate degree in Graphic Communication from Kennesaw State University in Atlanta Georgia, and then spent 11 years studying Japanese embroidery at Kurenai-kai, Japan. After a 5-year apprenticeship he became a professional embroiderer and instructor of basic, intermediate, and advanced classes for both Japanese and non-Japanese students. Arata also worked as an art director of Japanese Embroidery World Exhibition. He has taught and lectured in classes in New York, United Kingdom, Australia and Japan, as well as for EGA and as a visiting professor to the University of Kentucky.
Arata lives in Atlanta, GA where he is an instructor at the 26-year old Japanese Embroidery Center.

October 6, 2018 - October 7, 2018Inspired by a 16th century illuminated manuscript, the emblems of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon are worked in layers of polychrome silk and a variety metal threads. Basic embroidery stitches in silk thread are combined with gold and silver threads to create an intricately stitched image that glitters subtly. Techniques used include burden stitch over plate, padded satin, couching, threaded lizerene and chipping. The project will be embroidered on a cream silk ground.

Taught by Margaret Kinsey (view bio)Margaret Kinsey is an EGA certified teacher in silk and metal thread embroidery. She is certified to teach Japanese traditional embroidery. She is the designated US teacher for the Kunimitsu Rozashi Studio and studies with Fumiko Ozaki. Margaret is the 2010 recipient of the national EGA Gold Thread Award and teaches at all levels of EGA. She teaches at national seminars and chapters of ANG and EAC. She was the 2012 keynote speaker and taught at the New Zealand Embroidery Guild Conference in Christchurch, NZ, and toured, taught, and lectured additional venues in New Zealand. Margaret chaired the 5th, 6th and 7th EGA International Embroidery Conferences. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from NAN, 2021.

Chain for Lady Blanche is a chain that might have been worn by Blanche Parry, Queen Elizabeth I’s Chief Gentlewoman and Keeper of Her Majesty’s Jewels. It is inspired by Elizabethan and Jacobean jewelry in London’s Cheapside Hoard which was discovered in 1912. You will learn to make components using a variation of Huichol stitch (a type of netting), cubic right angle weave, and peyote.

October 6, 2018 - October 7, 2018Combining stumpwork with silk ribbon, Partridge in a Pear Tree creates glowing, dimensional embroidery on silk dupioni. Beaded flowers and berries add bright glints of color reminiscent of an illuminated manuscript. Students will stitch needle lace over felt and as a detached element over wire. Using overdyed ribbon, stranded cotton and pearl cotton creates naturalistic color variations. While floche stitched over felt produces silky smooth pears. Partridge introduces the most commonly used raised and padded techniques in a fun class.

Imagine a full-blossomed pink peony adorning a table in the center hall of a mid-19th century home, next to a small silver tray for calling cards. Flowers were often gifted in this time in history; one could say a great deal by choosing the correct one. The peony was a popular design in the classic Baltimore album quilts of the period. Its symbolism ranges from healing to honor. The Spray of Peony block will achieve a completely updated look using dimensional techniques of layering and Deborah’s own needle slanting techniques.

She teaches “Design for Tatting” for the Online Tatting Classes. Kaye is a member of EGA, ANG, NAN, and the Quilters’ Hall of Fame; and is working on Level 2 certification from the Japanese Temari Association. She has been teaching locally since 1987 and nationally since 2007 for The Quilters’ Hall of Fame, EGA, and NAN. Kaye is a certified teacher of surface embroidery with NAN.
