Thank you, Rona, for your valuable analysis, I truly appreciate it. The background stitch in the lower right is called Japanese Darning, which belongs to the running stitch family. It is easy to stitch, and it looks pretty.
In order to see the colors better, this photo was taken outside in the shade in the afternoon. (Some of my earlier photos…[Read more]

I don’t feel this is as done as I would like (or as well done as I would like) but I could not stand working on it any more without getting some feedback. I share Anneli’s enthusiasm/frustration with the process of learning and using new stitiches and incorporating them into a “real” piece. I spent hours trying to figure out that d*** coral…[Read more]

Michelle, I think your work is beautiful. I don’t how to stay it any better! it looks carefully stitched and wonderfully detailed. As to your concern about the French knots: as a general matter, i think the imperfections of hand stitching are what make it special and beautiful. We’re not machine stitching, and the variety shows that. I vote for…[Read more]

Anneli, I love this in so many ways. Here are just a few (I feel like I just cribbed William Shakespeare. LOL): the fill is amazing; I’m particularly intrigued by the fill in the lower right — the section with the orange and turquoise circles. I’m hoping you;ll share what stitch that is. The balance is great between the blue and orange wedge on…[Read more]

My finished work looks like this. I made the design come out stronger from the background, as I added some stitching over it. I was quite at a loss of what to do, as my reference sources really did not explain how to do it. This project taught me to do many stitches that I had not tried before – so I feel all the work was worth the time.
The next…[Read more]

Ms. Michler,
Thank you so much for such an enjoyable course. I learned a lot! Before starting, my thinking was something like, “This should be easy- just do some stitches”. But I really had to think about my choices carefully, and still experiment at the same time. Your guidance, pictures, and feedback were very helpful!
I hope everyone had as…[Read more]

Thanks Deborah
Using this kind of fabric never occurred to me, but I certainly will keep this approach in mind and try it sometime. It is a great learning tool to see the work of others!

Yes, you can do many of these! You may like to explore color schemes, experiment with a stitch, create different forms… Lots of possibilities to get the creative juices flowing!

Deborah, this is delightful! And, for some reason, it never occurred to me that we could do multiple takes on this project (duh!), or that it could be used on other kinds of fabrics. You’re inspiring me. Also, I love the idea that you and others have raised, about doing a project with variations of a particular stitch. Meanwhile, I will soon…[Read more]
