Professional embroiderers of the 17th century faced many of the same economic pressures that businesses encounter today—rising labor costs, expensive materials, slow-paying clients, and the constant need to manage operating expenses and cash flow. This emerging research explores how early modern embroidery “brands” developed, employing familiar merchandising tactics to produce goods for clients of varying means. We will also consider how designers exploited principles of visual perception, shedding light on both the artistry and the business acumen behind these exquisite works.
