Cheekwood Chapter
The Shelbyville (TN) Satellite group of Cheekwood Chapter has been decorating a tree for the community and displaying it at a local bank (rotating every year) for 39 years.
This year’s tree is at Wellworth Bank and will stay up ’til around New Years. The theme is Holiday Words, and Hearts.
On September 25th, 14 Cheekwood members enjoyed an outing to the Tennessee State Museum to see the “Samplers and Young Women: Threading Together Art and Education” exhibit.
Julia Doyle, the museum’s Curator of Textiles and Fashion, gave us a tour and spoke about the samplers. The runs through spring of 2026.
Susquehanna Chapter
Our chapter has been busy in the community lately. On November 9th member Janet Salerno taught a seasonal project to eight eager girl scouts in a local troop. The young ladies learned a variety of surface stitches with the help of five members of Susquehanna. A fine time was had by all.
Susquehanna Chapter was asked to fill the cases at Fredricksen Library for the month of December, and we didn’t disappoint. Our theme was the seasons of the year, with embroidery for each season. If you have a chance, stop by and take a look. Thanks to all who contributed. We’re really are a talented bunch. – Janet Bex

Moon on the Water
Ground: Antique Blue 18 ct mono canvas
Design Size: 6” x 7”

Designed as a companion piece to Wendy’s Sunrise Reflection, this design leaves the viewer in a peaceful state watching the water ripple the reflection of the very large romantic moon. The goals for this piece are to work at moving from one color to the next as seamlessly as possible utilizing both color and texture of stitches chosen. The sky threads will glint a little as the stars rise around the moon. Long interlocking stitches such as giant brick stitched horizontally and staggered giant Hungarian ground stitches as well as darning stitches that take advantage of the canvas color, will light up around the moon down to the horizon. The moon itself will appear to glow on its own with a softness expressed with Vineyard, Pepper Pot, and Planet Earth silks. The craters of the moon will be indicated using the Circular Bargello Twist motif in two sizes. Shifting between the two and placement of segments of the Twist motifs will give texture to the moon. Add in a little glint for extra focus.
The water will reflect the colors of the sky using the softer Pepper Pot and Vineyard silk threads in darning patterns and oblique long stitches. The whole point to the design is to emphasize the reflection of the moon on the water. This will be accomplished using small shallow crescent stitches manipulated to be their flattest. These will be stitched in the exposed canvas left after completing the water stitching.
To ground the design in nature, a small spit of land, a dock, and finally the tree will give shadowed perspective to the design and help anchor the composition. The tree will also use unique versions of crescent stitches to create the sparse foliage of the tree silhouette.
