On this clip from Creative Living with Sheryl Borden(KENW), designer Catherine Jordan discusses what contemporary open embroidery is and how the open effect is achieved. Examples include showing how you can look right through the opening to the other side for a maximum dimensional effect and includes open forests and landscape features showing the many inner and outer layers.

On this clip from Creative Living with Sheryl Borden(KENW), designer and EGA member Catherine Jordan talk about painting on fabric. Jordan shows examples of embroidery which has had the background painted and also demonstrates how to mix the paints and add them to the fabric. There are many examples of painted skies, foregrounds, and shading including painting for bookmarks, book covers, pin cushions, painting on felt, and needlework maps.

On this clip from Creative Living with Sheryl Borden(KENW), designer Catherine Jordan shows examples of reversible cross stitch embroidery. Catherine demonstrates how to work a straight line which is reversible with the double running stitch and work a reversible cross stitch. There are examples on linen, linen banding, and stiffened felt; a matching bookmark and coaster worked as reversible crossword puzzles are shown, cleverly designed so that the words are not identical on the front and back. A variety of black work bookmark examples are shown.

On this clip from Creative Living with Sheryl Borden(KENW), designer Catherine Jordan show examples of work stitched using a paper design transfer technique. Catherine explains the process of printing the design on tissue paper and then stitching through the paper and removing it. The process is demonstrated with examples of transferring a design for ornaments, making beautiful lettering using this technique, and using it on a book cover and bookmarks.
