Outside the Hoop: Autumn Flowers Boots Embroidery by Meaghan Monroe

EGA is excited to share a fun new project for our Outside the Hoop series: the Autumn Flowers Boots Embroidery by Meaghan Monroe. The Autumn Flowers Boots project is a fun way to celebrate the season. The design uses only 4 stitches and DMC threads you can source easily from your local craft store. Meaghan is one-third of the artisan team known as Subito Farm Designs. The Subito Farm Designs team loves crafting and creating in the fiber arts world, whether it’s punch hooking, knitting, felting, spinning, or needlework. Follow Subito Farm Designs on Instagram and Facebook to see new kits from Meaghan. You can also follow along as she works on more complex projects on her personal Instagram account. If you are in the Northeast, you can also find Meaghan in the Subito Farm booth at many of the fall sheep and wool festivals this autumn, including the New York State Sheep and Wool Festival.

Notes

Keep the back of your stitches as tidy as possible so there are not a lot of knots or loose threads on the inside of your boots. As you stitch, you may catch and pull some of the rubber elastic. Try to avoid this, but if it does happen, you can cut off any elastic poking out or push it through to the inside of the boot.

Stitching inside of a boot can be tricky! To make it easier, try to start your thread near the bottom of the boot and finish your thread closer to the top of the boot. You will find it easier to finish a thread/cut off excess closer to the opening of the boot.

DMC threads have 6 strands. In this project, all stitches are stitched using all 6 strands.

Instructions

First, use the white colored pencil to sketch the design onto your boot. The colored pencil is not permanent and will brush off as you stitch, but it is helpful to lay out where your stitches will go so you have an idea of the layout before you begin.

Start with the exterior panel of the boots. Stitch the stems and leaves of the sedums. Begin by stitching the stems using Stem stitch in 937. Once a stem is finished, add two Lazy Daisy stitches at the top in the same color as the leaves. Then, work your way back down the stem, adding the leaves in 937 using Lazy Daisy stitch. Once the first stem is complete, continue with the second stem.

Next, stitch the stems and leaves of the asters. Using 730, stitch the stems using Stem stitch. Add leaves to each stem using Lazy Daisy stitches in the same color, 730.

The last stems you need to stitch are for the grasses. Stitch these stems using Stem stitches in 780. Once you have completed the stems, add the white feathers to the grasses using 2 Satin stitches in Ecru at the tip of each of the grass stems.

Next, stitch the asters. Using 3820, add 8 petals to the two flowers on the outside and 4 petals to the middle flower using a Lazy Daisy stitch for each petal. To finish these flowers, add 3 French knots in 801 to the center of each aster flower.

Finally, stitch the sedum flowers. First, start the flowers using French Knots in 3802. The French knots should fill the full space where the flowers will be, but leave some blank space for the second color. Next, add additional French Knots in 223 to fill the gaps.

Great job! Now you have finished the first panel of your boots. Next, we will stitch the interior panel of the same boot. You can of course stitch any of the flowers on any side of your boots, so feel free to mix and match.

For this side of the boot, begin by stitching the grass using Stem stitches in 937. Add the stems of the asters using Stem stitch in 730. After stitching each aster stem, work your way back down the stem adding leaves using Lazy Daisy stitches in 730.

Next, add the flowers using 4 Lazy Daisy stitches for the 4 petals in 3802, 3820, or 223. Finish the flowers using 3 French knots at the center of each flower in 801.

Congratulations! You have finished both panels on one boot. Follow the same instructions to stitch your second boot to match.
