From Merill’s webpage: “Fiber art, as part of the Post-Modern art movement, moves beyond aesthetic concerns to value the physical, sensual properties of matter and/or to use matter to communicate cultural meanings and contemporary narratives. Fiber artists seek to create objects of beauty, convey stories inherent in materials, document history, and provide social critiques. Merill Comeau’s lecture will begin with a sampling of Post-Modern fiber artists that inspire her. Sharing these artists will illustrate practices of material exploration, social commentary, a variety of processes, and the results of including community participation. Next, Comeau will share her own artistic journey and current practice, including her deep engagement with autobiographical narrative, a commitment to historical research, and her visual expression of social and conceptual underpinnings. Artworks will include pieces created in her solo studio practice and installation works resulting from her facilitation of community projects.”
