It is my first ever sampler, Ann Fleming’s Sampler of 1810 produced by The Scarlet Letter.  It is stitched on 30 count linen.  I am using DMC cotton threads as none came with the kit, just the fabric and pattern.

I have completed the border in cross stitch and am part way through the chain stitch cartouche.  I adjusted the first half of the left side of the cartouche to align the central pieces with the images already stitched above and below.

Having tried 3 times to continue in chain stitch to the start of the right side I think I am doing something wrong as the stitches are uneven.  It is not just the linen threads being closer together but actually stitching over 2 threads seems to be the problem in this direction.

Has anyone else stitched this design?  If so, did you experience this problem?

If I begin the right side from the top the stitches will be in the opposite direction.  Is this OK on a sampler?
