Overview
Countryside Sampler with Helen M. Stevens: Workshop and UK Tour
Here is an opportunity to study thread painting with renowned artist Helen M. Stevens in her home area, Bury St. Edmunds, to tour the town, and then launch on a tour of manors and museums, to enjoy the embroideries and textiles of the English. Planning is begun, and we are offering you a sneak peak at our tentative plans. This itinerary is in flux, but this will give you a general idea of the tour. September 9-20, 2019.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Monday, 9 Sept – arrival and welcome that evening
Day 2 – Tuesday, 10 Sept – 1 1⁄2 hour tour of Bury St Edmunds; full day of class at 10AM
Day 3 – Wednesday, 11 Sept – a half day of class from 9-12, Free afternoon
Day 4 – Thursday, 12 Sept – a half day of class from 9-11:45. We will drive to Oxburgh with Helen to view embroideries of Mary Queen of Scots. Box lunch on the bus.
Day 5 – Friday, 13 Sept – a full day tour to Cambridge and the Fitzwilliam Museum. Free time in Cambridge. Return to Bury St Edmunds.
Day 6 – Saturday, 14 Sept – our original venue has closed due to a death. New venue TBD. We move to Norwich for 2 nights.
Day 7 – Sunday, 15 Sept – a step-on guide for a tour of Norwich. Then, to the Norwich Museum and Carrow House.
Day 8 – Monday, 16 Sept – a driving day from Norwich to Aylesbury. We will stop for lunch in Ely and a tour of the embroidered vestments at the Ely Cathedral. Two nights in Aylesbury.
Day 9 – Tuesday, 17 Sept – a tour of the Embroiderers’ Guild of England Museum. Possibly an opportunity to visit their collection Aylesbury. Free time.
Day 10 – Wednesday, 18 Sept – A visit at the Ashmolean Museum and a visit to their vault to view a portion of their embroidery collection. Free time in Oxford.
Day 11 – Thursday, 19 Sept – A visit to Windsor Castle with a potential opportunity to view their embroidery collection. If no collection, we’ll be visiting the Royal Castle Drive to Hilton London Heathrow Airport.
Day 12 – Friday, 20 Sept – we go our separate ways.
