Medieval Needlework 4 years, 11 months ago
It looks like all is quiet on the forum front, but I may as well say something to liven it up a little. I have no experience yet in this time period, but it has been a favorite historical era for me for a long time. In college I did an in-class presentation on some of the dyes, and am intrigued by the early formation of the craft guilds and the…[Read more]

There are a lot of older books out there with great photos of Medieval needlework. Itbis also true no garments appear that are not ecclesiastical. We know Chaucer mentioned one of his characters had black embroidery on her white shift and that it was the same front and back. But not a lot of textual evidence of embroidered clothing exists. That…[Read more]

I think you make good points, both about the accepted assumption of embroidered clothing not being “a thing” and also with your own guess about human nature. 🙂
I’m somewhat familiar with the blackwork-embroidered underclothing, as it became prominent later in history, but I didn’t know Chaucer had referred to it so early on!
I have been…[Read more]

I am using my piece on a wooden jewelry box for my Grand-daughter. I am not finishing the last two border rows until I receive the box & know how much space I need to fit inside the opening. I\’m doing the box, because I wish to enclose a beaded necklace I made inside & my Grandmother\’s pin…….the continuity of family continues!

Hi Brenda, I see this post was done on your Profile. You will need to post it to the group here if so the teacher and other students can see it: https://egausa.org/groups-directory/class-vintage-log-cabin/

Here is my completed button. My needle weaving is not great at the beginning but improved as I went along. Also 2 more that I tried for a crazy quilt block. The Kreinik braid was not easy to use but I like the way it looks. Pat, any tips for making a bow on the button rim the will stay horizontal? The braid is not the best fiber for that I…[Read more]

I really loved this project. I worried about what the framing would cost so was on the lookout for a circular frame at antique stores over the last few weeks. This frame actually came from a malfunctioning clock I had in the garage. Thanks for the lessons on needles, threads, and stitches. And particular thanks for the project, Judy…[Read more]
