Master Craftsman: Beading

$50.00

The first five steps of our Master Craftsman: Beading program requires a mastery of the knowledge of five different techniques and the completion of a piece in that technique: Square Stitch and/or Loom Weaving, Herringbone Stitch, Peyote Stitch, Bead Embroidery, and Right Angle Weave. Step 6 combines three of those techniques in an original piece. All Steps are judged on following directions closely, good documentation, material choices for the design, good design and color choices for the technique, and a well-executed piece.

Description

Beading, Step #1, stitched by Sarah Langston

Step 1: Square stitch and/or bead weaving on a loom used to create a wall hanging, a bell pull or a bracelet with earrings or a pendant of specific dimensions. Participant must demonstrate stitch technique, increasing/decreasing, color/shading usage and appropriate finishing.

Step 2: An original design using the Herringbone (Nedebe) to create a dimensional work with size limitations. Flat and tubular Herringbone plus increasing and decreasing must be demonstrated.

Step 3: Student must demonstrate the Peyote Stitch in flat, odd and even count, tubular, three dimensions and undulated edges to create a bracelet, necklace and a pair of earrings. The student may use an existing or altered design within the perimeters set using the peyote stitch with emphasis on stitch techniques, color usage and fringe techniques.

Step 4: A Student must demonstrate three different methods of bead embroidery in one piece using appropriate beads and embroidery techniques.

Step 5: Student must use right angle weave to create a dimensional piece with size limitations. Appropriate use of materials and stitch technique is emphasized.

Step 6: The final piece must demonstrate Master Craftsman ability in a piece of original design using at least three of the previous techniques. It should be three-dimensional showing good color usage with appropriate bead and stitch techniques.

Judging: May and November

Judging Criteria: Workmanship, selection of appropriate materials, mastery of beading techniques, color, and ability to follow directions.
