Learn this special style of Hungarian embroidery (írásos) that dates back to the 1700s in Transylvania, Romania. Used primarily for decorative home linens it was an important part of a young woman’s dowry in the Kalotaszeg region of Transylvania. Today a few women still stitch pieces to honor their family members, church, and special events, and to sell in the community.
Lesson 1 covers the foundation chain stitch that makes up the majority of the project. Lessons 2 and 3 cover supplemental details and stitches. You may frame your finished work or incorporate it into a sewing project of your choice.
