2006 Indiana State
Day Project

An original design based upon the 25th anniversary sampler designed by Gloria Lacy. A variety of 36 sampler blocks form four separate explosions of color. The model was worked on off-white Congress Cloth with DMC / Anchor floss using five hues of each color. Each block is 18 threads by 18 threads with the possibility of using more than one thread color or fiber in some. The design invites experimentation by those comfortable with it.

Red Clock Sampler

This sampler of elegant and graceful clock motifs dates from a period in history when knitting and embroidery were combined to produce beautifully embellished garments. These "clock" patterns, carefully recorded in silk cross stitch on linen fabric, are similar to designs which have been used for centuries to decorate knitted stockings.

Blue Clock Sampler

This “clock” sampler was worked in silk cross stitch on linen. The pendulum design has been used for centuries to decorate knitted stockings. The motifs in the lower section can modify existing clocks or create new patterns. These motifs also appear in 18th century samplers from Berks County, Pennsylvania. These patterns can be used by knitters, beaders, and embroiderers. The maker of the sampler may have worked in a knitting factory or as a seamstress.
