Fiber Forum

Fiber Forum was organized in 1992 in order to advance embroidery as an art form through the exhibition of original works of exceptional merit. To this end, the group endeavors to have a biennial exhibit in art centers, galleries, or museums throughout the country. It also exhibits annually at the National Seminar in the Education Exhibit.

New Members are juried in each year by accredited judges on the basis of both aesthetic achievement and technical skill. Members are juried through digital photos of original, non-teaching pieces. To remain a member of Fiber Forum requires re-jurying at least every three years with digital photo submissions of members’ new work. This procedure encourages each person to set a learning challenge and helps to attain personal goals. Upon acceptance, the membership fee is $25.00 annually.

EGA members interested in keeping abreast of the activities of Fiber Forum may become a member of Fiber Forum Friends. The Fiber Forum Friends as well as members receive dates for Fiber Forum jurying, exhibits, and other news. To become a Friend, sign up on line by using the link to the right, or send your name, address, membership and telephone numbers, e-mail address, chapter name, and region, together with $10.00 check (payable to EGA), or Visa/MasterCard #, expiration date, and signature to EGA National Headquarters. Please indicate “Fiber Forum Friend.” Fiber Forum Friends is open to any EGA member.

Fiber Forum Retreat 2008 with Carol Wilcox Wells

Carol Wilcox WellsAsheville, NC / Sun-Wed, April 20-23, 2008

Nestled in the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina, the city of Asheville is the chosen site for Fiber Forum Retreat 2008 with Carol Wilcox Wells, beading artist. Asheville has embraced art and artists for many years and is known as a center for artistic exploration. The beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway runs through the east side and the world famous Biltmore Estate and Winery is only three miles south of downtown.

Carol Wilcox Wells, having explored the use and flexibility of Chevron Stitch for many years, will share with retreat participants her wealth of knowledge using beads to construct jewelry and sculpture by adjusting tension. Carol is an artist, teacher, and author. She left a successful career as a graphic artist to pursue her love of beads. Her work has been collected and exhibited around the world, and featured in publications such as Ornament, Lapidary Journal, Bead and Button, and Beadwork magazines. She has taught bead weaving techniques to hundreds of students across the United States and England. Carol’s first book Creative Bead Weaving has been referred to as the “beading Bible”. Her second book, The Art and Elegance of Bead Weaving, is filled with wonderful jewelry designs and directions to make them.

Retreat participants will stay at the Haywood Park Hotel, located in the heart of downtown Asheville. The hotel is within walking distance of fine restaurants, quaint boutiques, bead shops, and numerous galleries. The property, once an Ivey’s department store, has been renovated into one of Asheville’s premier hotels. The Haywood Park Hotel has offered Fiber Forum participants a special room rate of $150.00 plus taxes per night. More information about amenities offered at the Haywood Park can be found at their website.

  • Sunday evening, April 20th: We will gather for the Welcome Dinner at the Flying Frog Café, located conveniently in the hotel. There you will meet Carol Wilcox Wells and visit with other participants.
  • Workshop begins Monday, April 21 and continues through Wednesday April 23, 2008
  • Class size will be limited to 20 participants
  • Students must be experienced in beading techniques — this is NOT a workshop for beginners
  • Supply lists will be sent to each participant before the retreat
  • A slide/lecture, titled “Through the Bead Years: Carol Wilcox Wells” will be given one evening during the retreat

  • The registration fee for the workshop is $300.00. The 2008 retreat registration fee includes the workshop, welcome dinner, and the slide/lecture.

Registration is currently open. Registration dates are as follows:
